Day 12: High Maintenence

There is nothing that grabs your attention at night like a well made neon sign, but it seems that there is a lot of upkeep involved. There are many wonderful neons around town that are not working completely. This I guess is one of the major downside for them.

So i don't know about you but I'm getting increasingly bored with my blog post comments. This sign is in the industrial "district" of cedar city and it reminded me that this is once again a small town growing into a little city. One of the main sources of employment is construction and this is the type that often is associated with construction. Its to the point unembellished and as long as its readable it serves its purpose even if its a little weathered.

graphic messages?

Clearly this picture is from a different season, but I wanted to see what kind of effects you could use putting text in grass. I thought this was a good idea because it seems like a lot of students are just counting down the moments until graduation. Aren't we supposed to be enjoying this time in our lives? But I know we all feel that sometimes. I like the idea of having insightful little messages posted around campus for students to ponder while walking to class. The typophoto discussion has really kept me thinking about how important we as designers can be in communicating a message, setting a theme, or affecting the ideas of people around us. This probably isn't the best theme to set on a college campus, but the thought is strong just the same.

day 12:

I found this sign at the old gas station I blogged about yesterday. This sign is the name of the former gas station that sold that type of gasoline. I think this sign is very interesting. I like the old time typeface for the words Phillips and 66. I think the number at she bottom really complement the typeface very well. I like the fact they are reversed and the Phillips is orange and the numbers 66 is black. I like the shape of the sign and the simplicity of the sign. it really draws you in and it has really good balance throughout the sign ans delivers a clear message.
I also find it funny that it is right next to a Route US 66 sign. Route US 66 is a major highway that travels through the US west to east. You can see that the shape of the Route US 66 sign is the same as the shape of the Philips 66 sign ans they were playing on the familiarity with that sign and highway to sell their gasoline.

Festivals

I was trying to find something that represented the festivals here in Cedar. Skyfest is a big one that brings a lot of crowds. Since they aren't here right now, here's a logo of how they advertise with this Skyfest logo.

Mexican Anyone? (Day 12)

Well if you are into the yard sale thing this is the place to be to help some people in need.

Elk Parking

I decided to try having a bit of fun with these last few blogs. I saw this sign for Elks Parking
and thought of an actual Elk.

Buyer's Market

In today's economy, a real estate sign has better use as a fence than as a advertisement. I guess they are looking for alternate forms of work as well.

Colisuem

Well this photo was taken not far from my previous two posts. It's like I'm following a trail of bread crumbs across campus, only the bread crumbs are monuments bearing commemorative metal placards.

These things make me wish I had a lot of money so that I could donate it to some institution that would build something big and subsequently embellish it with a metal plate bearing my name, thus immortalizing my legacy.

Dan Gill

derrick williams (day 11)

i took this picture when i was going to play some b-ball and i just liked the composition and how the type on the left really fills the space to the lefts and everything draws the to the center. nothing really else to say...

Under Belly

I am not going to lie. I pretty bored with this assignment now and I find it kind of hard for me to go out to do this project. I was going to post another thing from my past, but really I don't want to do it. This post is about the Under Belly of Cedar City and the typography of a unspoken world. The last time I was here was about two years ago.

Visual Tension ( Devo: day 11)

Sorry, the picture is bad, it was after Art Insights. It was cold and dark, and I did not want to get out of the car. This sign has fine typography, but has bad visual tension. A good example of how layout of graphics around type, can effect the types effectiveness. The sign does not have a consistent white boarder around it. Were the embellishment is flush to the brick wall, and where the embellishment has a white boarder.... Creates an unwanted visual tension.
