Cornerstone
I was going to iterate a comprehensive dissertation regarding the metaphorical significance of typography as a veritable cornerstone of communication, but in the fleeting moments I have to post this entry, I've come to realize how much time is of the essence, and briefness is paramount. I, therefore, leave you with this photo of type ON a cornerstone. Additionally, Roman numerals are cool, and if you use them you will be too. If you have taken the time to read my previous entries, it should be apparent that this one is, for the most part, in accordance with my theme. Ergo, it is pointless for me to blather on, thus being painfully redundant. Let this marinate in your mind.
Sincerely,
Dan Gill

day six: surrounding areas...or in other words negative space
I have met people here in Cedar who are from varying places outside of Cedar. After talking with some of those people the other day I wanted to include their being a part of Cedar in this project.
I remembered how I mentioned that the surrounding areas of Cedar could be what defines Cedar, just like negative space can define a letterform. I realized that the various ways the negative space is used creates a different look, feel, weight, etc. of the letterform. In this case, the negative space (or the people from varying places outside Cedar) are further in the positive space (Cedar City). So if Cedar City were to be a font, it would have a thin strokes.
I chose to use license plates to illustrate where some of these people may be from. I wonder what a license plate for Cedar City would look like?
main
A friend of mine really isn't a fan of Cedar City. I thought main street was a pretty good place to make your mark. I really like this handwriting chicken scratch. I wonder if people would take the time to read things on main street when they are driving by. Maybe it would cause accidents. It would be kind of cool if homemade typography installations could cause that much of a ruckus. Not that car accidents are cool.
What to do in Cedar?
Day 6: Jade Gelskey
Day 6: Pick Six (appropriate for this day :)
Day 6:
So for this one I wanted to look at the color of these advertising signs in Cedar City. I compared this to the other images I grabbed for the week and it is very similar when it comes to color with the rest. I did not want to look at color till a bit into the 15 days but I think its definitely part of what makes these signs so successful. Lots of bright, warm "happy" colors are used and I think this really helps the viewer feel welcome and excited. The color choices, had they been dark would not encourage the viewer to stop in and get a meal.
This one has almost neon colors and I really do think this helps grab the viewers attention. All in all I think it really adds to the success.

First Day of Naturally Weathered Type
So I've kinda been ignoring the fact that my original plan was to have a "tour" of cedar city through it's signage. I kinda cheated a little using some books and posters but give me a break it was hard to find it. Naturally weathered type on the other hand is in great abundance in cedar city and I'm interested to find it and what it could say about cedar city. Today i took this picture of a very interesting little billboard that is no longer in use but shows the remnants of a little of cedar "history" if you can call it that. I think it is pretty cool.
A Kid From Cedar CIty: II
Well here is part two from the past. I use to go to middle school right across from SUU. I had a lot of fun experience there. I wish I could of found more evidence of the school, but I did end of find some old graffiti and a old sign for the pool that was there when I went to school there. It is crazy to realize that Cedar City has change so much since I was a kid to now.
derrick williams (day 6)
After i took some pictures from day five i decided to look else where and i started to look further more into the emblem of the SUU emblem and found two of them that are from SUU but totally different. for example, the top seems to convey more of a academic feeling and the bottom seems to be something else.
Today I feel...
day 6
this is a sing on one of the local motels. I like the use serif and san serif type in the same sing. the letter Z is particularly dramatic and it underlines the name of the the motel . I think the sign is an interesting shape -a diamond. It is different from the a lot of other signs of motels in Cedar and there are many in the is town.
I don't think the design on the bottom of the red rocks of this area is very effective and it is difficult to tell what it is from a distance. The sign itself has a retro 80's feel. The exaggerated Z is good because it integrates the two different typefaces together. The word Motel stand out because of the sharp lettering and the pointed slash design that divides the diamond in half.
Gravity Logo ( Devo: day 6)
I went to see Avatar last night. If you can get over the whole, America is bad, Capitalism is evil, Marines are blood thirsty, we are destroying our planet, underlining message of the movie... it was actually pretty good. I am just tired of watching movies with this junk in it, like Wall-E, battle for terra, and now Avatar. I thought the whole Nazi style propaganda, and indoctrination in movies, books, and media is a bad thing... I guess propaganda, and indoctrination is ok, as long as people feel strong about the cause. But of all the propaganda, indoctrination movies I have seen, this movie was THE BEST!!!!
Well the movie had some interesting type in it, I will talk about that in my next post. I did really enjoy this logo that was up on the screen every five minutes before the show. I guess it's Gravity dance studio in Cedar City. I love the mixing of the capital "G" font, with another. Margo Chase does a lot of font mixing. It's hard, and takes skill in type to pull off, but I think this was successful. The "G" gives a feeling of a dancer jumping through the air, I like it!

Wildflowers anyone?
So this may not be the greatest typographic thing, but I'm finding the cold and dreariness of winter very depressing lately and I thought I'd try to throw in something bright and cheerful like these flowers.
I happened to come across an image of the Cedar City sign from last year and saw at the bottom another sign advertising the balloon festival in September, which I thought was just something fun they did this past year. Then I got to thinking, where did that come from? I don't remember seeing that at all, what else am I missing? I decided to get onto the home page for Cedar City and there is a link listing all kinds of festivals I didn't even know about! Did you know that at Cedar Breaks they hold an annual wild flower festival in July? Who knew? Either I'm walking around too much with my eyes closed or as a designer I should be volunteering my services to help spread news about things like air balloon and flower festivals, and who knows what else. In the meantime, enjoy these bright pink flowers. Does anyone know what they are?
