Avatar and Papyrus ( Devo: day 7)

Avatar the movie and Papyrus font, a winning combo? I would have taken a picture of the movie screen, but was afraid of getting the motion picture movie association on my back for copy issues. But Avatar used Papyrus, I was first like... OH NO, they did not just do that. When the natives spoke their language, it was written in English, at the bottom of the screen in Papyrus. I still think another font would have worked better, but they were trying to give a certain feel to the natives, and refering it to clasical biblical writings did that for them... I think that was the thinking behind it. They were not afraid of any font snobs.... overall it worked.

day seven: start here

So in thinking up ways I will apply my findings to the final project I reviewed my previous posts. I realized that if this is going to be a tour, I needed to find something that could start out a tour of Cedar City. I was driving back from St. George & realized that this Cedar City sign on the south of town was the starting point of my tour through Cedar (except I remember that the lights on the C's were burnt out when I first saw this sign).

Cedar is well know for it's festivities, which is one of the main attractions for those outside Cedar City. However, in my time being here I have never attended any of the festivities that many people travel to come see. It's funny that people outside of Cedar City can actually help define Cedar.

Again this can be compared to my continuing theme of whether the positive or negative space defines something. In this case, it's the negative space.

Day 7: Jade Gelskey

Day 7 : Pick 6

Day 7: Here is another sign from the same restaurant as yesterdays post. I like this sign because while smaller in size it really still follows the same size style as the larger one. I think that this is an interesting phenomenon with the designing of these signs. While size may change they really stick to the same style of typography. Why? Because it is very effective. Many of these signs are read from the road while people are driving by. This makes it very important to keep the size big and easy to read.

day 7

hello dear classmates..

i have been brainstorming and spent much of today writing and drawing in my sketchbook to hash out the particular themes i have dealt with so far in these posts and would like to continue to deal with for this project:

basically, that is a list of the themes and concepts i plan to address through this project, i hope you can read them. comments, thoughts, and criticism are highly valued...

and these freakin sweet things are how i plan to achieve them.

curious yet?

Mexican Anyone? (Day 7)

So, this really has nothing to do with a Mexican joint that can be found in Cedar, but it is still connected with what I have been finding. I have been interested in the typography that has been done by the establishments in town on the ground level so to speak, and some how this interest got me to thinking what I can do personally for this project on a level that I have yet to do. So i decided to make some 3d cardboard type to be used for a project in my graphic design 2 class; yeah thats right two for one.

In & Out

Cedar City is also known as an in and out city. People stop and get gas, and then leave. I have to admit, I hadn't spent much time in Cedar besides doing this same thing while on road trips before I came to school here. Here's a pic of a pamphlet I got from Maverick, the cheapest gas in Cedar, most of the time. They use a lot of different fonts in their logo, and advertisements.

I am exploring different ways of using windows and found that this rock had made a window of its own. I will continue looking at ways to use type as a tool to view as well as communicate a message.

day 7

I found this old sing that is in poor shape. I really don't know why billboards stand out to me . Maybe they are fascinating to me because I am from Alaska where billboards are illegal there. This one is every old and needs repair. This is a older sign and you can see the newer behind it. The message is about a 1/2 price sale but clearly could not still be going on. So effectiveness of this sign is lost in it's poor condition and upkeep.

This type feels a little dated especially compared to the part of the newer sign on the top right. It really makes me wonder why it is still up and to what purposes it serves. I don't think that it would attract customers.

What are the differences?!

So when i started the project i thought it was going to be difficult finding type faces that will be able to match with the timeline. So i started off with the old western fonts and i keep finding more and more of them. The Wendys font you think would look like the first image i uploaded but its not. The font used in the Wendys logo is called Playbill and like the others it came about in the same time period but what are the differences with all of them. Its hard to find them. For example at a quick glance you'd think that the wendys and the maverick font would be the same but take a look at the M and the W. Since they are the same letter but switched around the M had a sharp point in the middle and the W has a little bit wider point. Second look at the R in maverick and the R in the sub logo for wendys. The R in maverick is thicker all around but the R in wendys has its thinker places. One thing that really sets them apart is the font in Wendys has like a swoosh at the end of the the letter and the maverick font is all just blocked. So there you go look at all the western fonts i have posted so now you can see the differences in them all. Ill be switchings themes now so dont worry about anymore fonts like that from me again.

More Western font

So after looking more around town i realized more and more that it is used more frequently then i thought. This assignment really is making me notice type faces more and more. I never really stopped and looked at type like how i have been doing with this assignment. The maverick font is called Alcalde and it came about the same time the other type faces did. But along with the other ones it is different in its own unique ways that makes it stand apart from them.

In Memory

I found this plate at the entrance of the Old Main building. It was placed there in memory of the founders. I found it to be similar to the plate on the Old Sorrel sculpture. I wish I had the means to make a plate like the ones I've shown. There's something rather dramatic about its level of permanence.

Interestingly, there was a large Roman numeral inscription of it's founding date on the building, just like the one from my previous post, only much larger. Exhibiting the founding date, reinforces a strong sense of establishment and tradition. Both examples on this building work well with the theme of typography that is meant to last.

MoMA vs. Braithewaite

I was out taking pictures the other day and snapped one of the Braithwaite. I know it's part of campus but I was rather disappointed that they used such boring type for such a unique building which also houses some unique art. Then I looked at the MoMa sign and thought that at least they did something a little more original and hung their sign down the side of the building. When put side by side I liked the contrast of textures and feel of it more than I care about the type. I suppose they're both easy to read, nice and safe. But perhaps I'll go steal the letters off the front of the building and hang them sideways too, or go this cool sign junkyard and replace it with something a little more flashy like Sullivan's. It could work...right?

Albertson's "A"

Here it is. One of the few remaining proofs that we had an Albertsons in Cedar City. I wonder how long it will be here...

day 7

Ignore the team photoshoot please. This was the best picture I had of the SUU logo on the basketball court. This isn't a typeface from the list that I added earlier, but Drew wanted a to graffiti the gym floor, so maybe I'll add this one to the list. It would have been pretty funny to have someone's name in our team poster.

I like the idea I have been playing with, but I'm worried that I'm following the assignment a little too loosely. I may need to change my idea or tweak it in some way. So I guess just be ready for something completely different if need be.

derrck williams (day 7)

here is a picture from the festival sign on main street and thought it went real well with the background. the text works will with the layout and but to me the color seems a little dull.

A Kid From Cedar City: III

Before it was Beach Break it was Sup Skateboarding and before that, it was called Grey Whales CDs. It is amazing to see how location can have so many different types of stores that come and go. Grey Whales was a hang out place for all Cedar City skaters and was defiantly part of my past. To bad we have a Breach Break there now. I hope they can get a better sign some day.

The sign graveyard is an awesome place. This is the old Sullivan's sign which currently has been replaced by a newer version. To me this weathered sign represented that even though cedar is expanding the "ma and pop" places that are customary in small towns still had their loyal customers and wouldn't be going anywhere anytime soon. The weathering on it was like a remnant of cedar in the good ol days, but of course i wasn't around then, and i think i am currently developing a phobia of small towns, but that, again, is beside the point.
